Lower Sioux Agency

Located in the heart of the Dakota homeland, the Lower Sioux Agency was established in 1853 as a U.S. government administrative center for the Mdewakanton and Wahpekute Bands of Dakota. Late payments and rising tensions led to the first organized attack of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.
