Library Field Trip Funding

2015-2016 History Day Library Funding  - Updated September 2015

Beginning in 2010, Minnesota History Day has partnered with the Council of Regional Public Library System Administrators (CRPLSA) to support statewide library programming with funding from the Legacy Amendment.

As of July 2015, CRPLSA opted to end the statewide partnership agreement with Minnesota History Day as the result of a reduction in Legacy funding to public libraries. While the statewide partnership has ended, several individual CRPLSA regions have decided to individually support History Day programs in their part of the state by supporting Hullabaloos at area libraries.

What Does this Mean for History Day?

Several major changes will take for Minnesota History Day library programs for 2015-16.

  • History Day Hullabaloos: History Day will run a limited schedule of Hullabaloos in 2015-16, supported in part from individual CRPLSA regions, as well as additional History Day funding. These events will continue to be free. Please check our website for dates.

  • Library Field Trip Subsidies: There is no statewide library funding available to subsidize the cost of library field trips for schools. If your school is located in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, or Washington county, you are eligible to apply for a limited pool of funds, sponsored by MELSA. These funds will be distributed to schools in the MELSA region on a first-come, first-serve basis, based on the completed application. To request this application, email Sammi Jo. Applications are due on December 1, 2015. Following this deadline, applications will be accepted as they are turned in.

  • Library Guides at the U of M Wilson Library: If you are planning on visiting the U of M Wilson Library, History Day will cover a limited amount of costs associated with hiring the required college students as library guides. These funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Schedule your U of M Wilson Library field trip as soon as possible to guarantee their availability.

  • MNHS Research Help Desk: History Day will support extra research help at the Minnesota History Center Library. The Help Desk will run Tuesdays from 4:00—8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. from Tues. Dec. 15 through Sat. Feb. 27.

Ideas for Finding Field Trip Funding

Schools are encouraged to take field trips to the same libraries that they have taken in the past, provided schools are able to find your own funding for transportation and arrange the trip in advance directly with that library. If you need additional financial support for your trip, consider asking your:

  • School board, Parent Teacher Organization, or school booster club

  • Community organizations

  • Local businesses

  • Community foundations with a focus on education

MNHS Field Trip Funding for Greater Minnesota Schools

Schools in Greater Minnesota (more than 50 miles from the Minnesota History Center) are eligible to apply for a limited amount of funds from the MacMillan Field Trip Grant when combining their research trip with a visit to an MNHS historic site or museum in the Twin Cities. Visit for more information.

The Minnesota Historical Society and the University of Minnesota understand the value of research support to History Day students and teachers. We are committed to finding additional funding opportunities to maintain these vital services. Please feel free to contact Sammi Jo with questions.
