Nancy Ziemer, a History Day teacher from North View Junior High in Brooklyn Park, and her former History Day student, Park Center High School senior Lacy Myrman, will participate in an amazing opportunity this summer.
As part of aNational History Day summer institute, "Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom," Ziemer and Myrman engage in a rigorous study of D-Day and World War II this summer. Fifteen student/teacher teams will travel to Washington, D.C., to study monuments and learn from scholars, and then will travel to Normandy, France to visit the beaches of the battlefield and the American cemetery. The participants will read several books leading up to their trip and will conduct research on a soldier buried at the cemetery.
Ziemer, a teacher with 21 years experience at North View Junior High, taught Myrman a few years prior, and coached her in the History Day program. At the 2010 Metro Senior regional event, Myrman received an honorable mention for her exhibit board on Margaret Sanger.
The institute is sponsored by Albert H. Small and National History Day. Except for travel to Washington, D.C., all expenses are paid.
