This photo of a Minnesota farmer during the Great Depression appears in Northern Lights. A Teaching Tip in the Annotated Teacher's Edition connects this historical image to geography, economics, and civics.

Meeting the Standards

Northern Lights, Revised Second Edition, provides new tools to help teachers meet academic standards for student graduation.

These tools build on the curriculum’s longstanding principles of using stories to teach critical thinking skills, encourage inquiry, and explore multiple perspectives. Now, the Revised Second Edition shows students how history, civics, economics, and geography work together to tell the stories of Minnesota and its people.

Minnesota Studies Standards

The Minnesota Department of Education revised its social studies standards in 2011, effective in May, 2013.

The revised standards designate grade six as the year that Minnesota Studies is to be taught in all Minnesota public schools. Minnesota Studies incorporates four disciplines: history, civics, geography, and economics. While the sixth-grade benchmarks address all four, history is the lead discipline.
