1st Minnesota general's cavalry saber and scabbard

Improvements in the accuracy of firearms and long-range weapons meant that most of the fighting in the Civil War took place over long or medium distances. Close combat weapons like this saber, carried by General Charles Powell Adams, became more of a decoration. Of all the casualties in the Civil War, only around .2% were caused by sabers.
