Yeast and grains are ingredients in both bread and beer. As the national movement for Prohibition of alcohol was growing, the Anti-Saloon League used the slogan "Bread not Beer" to show that resources were better used for food instead of alcohol. "Bread not Beer" was used throughout the World War I era, too, especially as the United States began to conserve resources for soldiers. Saving grain to make bread for troops was important during the war, so many anti-alcohol crusaders considered Prohibition patriotic.
