First Minnesota after the Battle of Fair Oaks
The Battle of Fair Oaks (also called the Battle of Seven Pines) was an attempt by the Confederates to keep Union forces away from the Confederate capital of Richmond. The battle -- May 31-June 1, 1862 -- did not result in a clear winner, and there were heavy casualties on both sides. Although the First Minnesota is most famous for the important role they played at the Battle of Gettysburg, the regiment was actually involved in 13 engagements, some big and some more minor. Fair Oaks was their third battle.
