Physician's pocket companion

Physician's pocket companion

This is a leather medicine case carried by Javan B. Irvine of the First Minnesota. The bottles appear to contain homeopathic medicines. Homeopathy is an alternative medical treatment with remedies that come from plants and animals. Since records show that Irvine was a builder, not a doctor, it is probable that he was not a medical professional but had some knowledge of homeopathic treatments. A few of the bottles' labels include CINA (used for intestinal worms), ARNICA TINCT (used for strains, sprains and bruises), and IGNATIA (used for grief and depression).
