Dear
Sir:
Mrs. Hammerberg has requested me as she can not write English, to write
you in behalf of her son, Carl John Alfred Hammerberg which the undersigned is
glad to do if this action is acceptable to you.
We may state as to the young
man’s past life, as requested in the blanks you mailed as
follows:
Habits:--He has always resided at home, and was careful to advise
his mother where he spent his evenings; he began smoking cigarettes about three
years ago with his mother’s permission, and to the best of his
mother’s knowledge had always abstained from alcohol and
drugs.
Character:--The boy loved his home and was always king and obedient
to his mother and only sister. He brought his pay checks home to his mother gave
her the money she desired and out of the balance he provided himself with
clothes by the use of a saving account at the Citizen State Bank

Disposition:--His disposition at home
was always the best, cheery, good hearted and generous.
Associates:--His
associates were for the most part the school mates of his district and also the
members of the lodge of which he was a member. His mother states that to her
knowledge he never attended dances as he was not able to dance, but that he did
occasionally accompany the other boys to the pool halls where they were
permitted.
Attitude Toward Society:--He was a member of good standing of the
Good Templer Lodge of West Duluth. A prominent member of this society have

He
