The happenings at Duluth on Tuesday when three Negroes were made the victims of lynch law, is to be regretted by all lovers of law and order. The crime for which the men were lynched was one of the most fiendish ever perpetrated in this county, and we have had some bad ones. Those who gathered to mete out justice did so without the added impetus of a skin full of booze. The concensus of opinion throughout the county is that, while the thing was wrong in principle, it was most effective and those who were put out of their criminal existence by the mob, will not assault any more young girls. The mob was not as blood-thirsty as may be imagined from reading accounts in the papers. Had they been such and had the race hatred spoken of predominated, the other three held in jail would have met a like fate. A special grand jury has been called to look into the matter and it is expected that indictments will be brought against those concerned in the lynching. How they are going to weed them out is past comprehension. There were from five to ten thousand people in the party. The police of Duluth had been instructed by their head not to use guns and this order is probably accountable for the fact that only three are dead. As we said before, the lynching is to be deplored. There were fathers, brothers, husbands and sons concerned in the affair. Supposing it was your daughter or sister, wife or mother? What would you do?
