MAY LOSE DULUTH RAPE CASE.
Owing to the fact that there are not sufficient funds to pay for the
printing of the brief in the case of Mason, the Negro who was convicted for
assault on the white girl, which caused the Duluth Lynching; it is probable that
the appeal to the Supreme Court will be lost by default–the time allowed
to present briefs being nearly expired. Efforts were made at the last minute to
interest the Twin City branches of the N. A. A. C. P., the Duluth branch having
given up the case after over $1,100.00 had been spent, in the trial. It is
reported that the national office of the N. A. A.. C. P. will not advance any
funds for the brief, which amounts to $200.00. This is deplorable and it is
about time that those who collect moneys for such purpose would see that enough
is appropriated for the entire procedure in reaching the last courts and that
due notice be given for the solicitation of more funds before it is too late. It
is the duty of the N. A. A. C. P. to support this appeal, or give good reasons
why.
